Alicia working at desk

I’m Alicia Hellmér Álvarez — bridging stories, people, and ideas.

I’m a communications and project assistant with a strong interest in how clear and inclusive storytelling can help people connect with European initiatives. Through my experience in EU-funded projects, citizen engagement, and digital media, I’ve learned to make complex topics accessible, engaging, and relevant across different cultures.

Journey

A visual path through academic, creative, and professional experiences.

September 2017

Departure to the United States

Fort Benton High School, USA

I moved from southern Spain to Montana, USA, for a full academic exchange year. It was my first long-term international experience, living with an American host family and learning to adapt to a completely different culture.

June 2018

Graduation in the United States

I graduated from Fort Benton High School with a U.S. High School Diploma while participating in debate and international clubs.

During this time, I also joined the athletics team, placing first in 1600m and third in 800m at regional competitions, discovering how persistence and teamwork translate across any field.

Beginning of University Studies

University of Murcia, Spain

Returning to Spain, I began my Bachelor’s in International Relations at the University of Murcia, focusing on European politics, diplomacy, and sustainability. It was the first step in understanding how global and European institutions shape people’s lives and how communication can bridge that gap.

March 2020

Literary Recognition at CreaMurcia Awards

Murcia, Spain

I received an Honourable Mention at the CreaMurcia Awards for a short story exploring identity and empathy. Writing has always been central to how I understand communication, combining creativity with social reflection.

I joined the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) as a Communications and Events Assistant. My tasks included supporting Erasmus+ operations for more than twenty international partners, redesigning student materials for clarity, and coordinating intercultural activities to enhance inclusion.

June 2023

Beginning My Master’s in European Union Studies

After completing my internship at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, I realised that I wanted to explore further and understand not only how European programmes are implemented but also how EU institutions communicate their policies and connect with citizens. During that period, I started preparing for the Master’s in European Union Studies at Instituto Europeo, with a particular focus on EU institutions, law, and communication strategies.

July 2023

Acting Hotel Manager

During the high season, I oversaw the daily operations of El Molino del Río Argos, a small cultural and eco-friendly retreat in southern Spain. I was responsible for coordinating events, supervising an international team, and creating promotional materials to enhance the inn’s online presence.

Communications and Web Volunteer

I joined the World Water Community, a global network promoting sustainable water use. I contribute to its digital strategy, help design monthly newsletters, and support website management by creating both visual and written content aimed at inspiring people to take action.

September 2025

Communications and Project Assistant

I was selected for the Eurodyssey traineeship programme in Brussels, where I joined Stickydot, a science engagement agency involved in EU-funded Horizon Europe projects. There, I supported communication and project coordination for initiatives such as the ECS Citizen Science Cluster and the I Love Science Festival, contributing to both editorial and multimedia content. This experience deepened my understanding of citizen engagement, EU research communication, and teamwork in multicultural, policy-driven environments.
